Novice Surfer Questions

Do I need to be a good swimmer to learn how to surf?  Not necessarily, but it really does help. Even if you aren’t a highly-skilled swimmer, you can still be a totally competent surfer. Of course, if you can’t swim at all, please do not go into the ocean until you have learned the basics because the ocean will kick your butt!  it is strongly advised to brush up on your skills before you try surfing.  Though you will have the buoyancy of the surfboard under you most of the time, you still need to be independent of the board at times andlearn to stay afloat. There will be times when you come detached from your board, so just in case you need to be able to safely swim ashore.

What age is too old to learn how to surf?   As with any sport, the younger you start, the easier it is to learn. Visit any beach community and you’ll see plenty of people ALL ages surfing or learning how to do so. If you have the energy and commitment, anyone can learn how to surf with competence. With that said, if you’re well past your prime in terms of physical coordination, fitness,  and strength, learning to surf will likely be a challenge. You may compete for waves with people who have much more experience than you, and you’re going to have to deal with being a new face on the water. You will get tired, muscles will be sore, andalso tire faster, and you may lack agility, but you can absolutely learn to surf at any age! All you need is a little patience, determination, use our surfboard chart to find a board that will maximize your ability, and stay positive.

Which is better to learn on a Longboard or Short?  Longboarding and shortboarding represent opposite ends of the surfing spectrum, both athletically and culturally.  Longboarders tend to be a more relaxed group, surfingon a variety of wave types and sizes. Shortboarders take a more aggressive approach to riding the waves, and requires a more specific wave type.  All and all, let us help you find the board that fits you, your comfort level, fitness, and motivation.  If choosing between 2 boards, always take the bigger board as the only downside is harder to torque the board around with your upper body.

Do I need a wetsuit?   We sell many wetsuits for both Men, Women, and children.  Whether you need a wetsuit depends entirely on where you want to surf. If you are in a cool or cold-water climate where temperatures fall below 70 degrees Fahrenheit, then you are strongly advised to use a wetsuit. If water temperature is at or above 70 degrees Fahrenheit, then a wetsuit is up to you.  We also carry half suits and scratch guards.

Where should I learn to surf?  Visit our shop or give us a call to see where many of the key spots are. Keep in mind, you want to meet two criteria which are a lack of crowds and beginner-friendly waves. The first one is easy enough, but what about beginner-friendly waves? Look for soft shoulders, and waves that are waist-high or below.

How much notice do you need for a surf lesson?

We ask for at least 24 hours notice, but will try to accommodate lessons that day if needed.

Do I need a deposit for a surfboard rental?

Yes, we do require a credit card to be present at the time of the rental and hold the card information as deposit until the board is returned.  Also, a copy of your Driver's license is needed as well.  Please make sure to clean off most of the sand before returning.
